Website Design for Artists

Sept 2025

Lead Facilitator

A hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop helping artists build a simple and functional online presence.

Website Building for Artists was a free online workshop facilitated for artists around the world as part of Artlink’s Share a Skill initiative.

The session introduced participants to the fundamentals of creating and maintaining an online presence, with a focus on the specific needs of artists and arts organisations. The workshop covered planning a website, choosing and setting up a domain, understanding website platforms, structuring content, and designing websites that are accessible, useful and easy to navigate.

Participants were introduced to platforms including Google Sites, WordPress, Wix and Squarespace, and worked through practical exercises to begin building their own websites. The session also explored how websites can be used to showcase artistic work, document projects, support funding applications, share resources and connect with audiences, collaborators and partners.

I work with artists, cultural organisations, students and creative communities to develop workshops around digital practice, technology, creative tools and professional skills. Sessions can be delivered online or in person, and can take the form of a short talk, practical workshop, masterclass, intensive or longer training programme. I’m also happy to develop a session around the particular needs of your group. If you’re interested in organising something, get in touch.

I designed and facilitated this practical workshop for artists at different stages of their digital practice. My approach was to demystify website building by focusing first on the purpose and audience of a website, rather than the technology itself. Participants were encouraged to think about their audience, content, functionality, discoverability and long-term maintenance before choosing a platform. The session combined discussion, examples, demonstrations and hands-on activities, allowing participants to begin developing their own online presence during the workshop.

Workshop Outline

Website & Digital Presence: Understanding how a website can support an artist’s practice, portfolio, documentation and professional development.

Planning: Identifying audiences, content, functionality, discoverability and internal maintenance needs.

Domains: Choosing a domain name, understanding domain extensions and the basics of domain registration.

Platforms: Comparing Google Sites, WordPress, Wix and Squarespace.

Building: A practical walkthrough of Google Sites, including pages, layouts, images, links, forms and publishing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants had a clearer understanding of how to plan and structure an artist website, choose an appropriate platform and domain, and create a simple online portfolio without coding. Participants also explored basic principles of website content, usability, mobile optimisation, discoverability and audience engagement.
